Wapping Children’s Centre
10th April 2019
This was an informal coffee morning meeting organised by Jane Batchelor with Helen Dickinson, Community Outreach Worker.
After a short period of general conversation between us and ten or so community centre users and everyone being kindly supplied with tea or coffee, Jane made introductions all round and outlined why we were there and introduced Dental Students who gave a most interesting talk on the importance of oral hygiene and how to best take care of your teeth and gums.
This was also aided by a practical display and issue of items that can be used to ensure an efficient cleaning of the teeth such as interdental brushes for cleaning the spaces between the teeth. They ably answered the many questions. Everyone there was very interested in what they had to say — they were very well received.
Jane then described her role and the work done by Barts Health and Queen Mary University of London and the various events she helped to organise. She took the opportunity to promote our Let’s Talk Hearts activities and also invited everyone to attend our forthcoming Science Festival.
Jane then introduced me and I spoke about my experiences as a clinical trials patient and promoted clinical trials in general. I mentioned and outlined briefly two studies currently taking place at the William Harvey and provided copies of the brochures giving details and contact points.
Overall, my impression was that the informal meeting went well and appeared to be well received by everyone. It felt as if it was a worthwhile visit.
