Research Matters
Great Hall, St Bartholomew’s Hospital

22nd May 2019

I attended this event where the Speakers were as follows:

Neeta Patel who welcomed all present and gave the “housekeeping” address. This was in addition to introducing us to a workshop activity, Patient Research Champions and closing remarks.

Professor Rupert Pearse, who gave the welcome and introduction address on behalf of Alwen Williams, Chief Executive of Barts Health NHS Trust, who regrettably was unable to attend. Professor Pearse  also gave a closing address.

Christine Menzies, Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement Lead, NIHR Clinical Research Network: North Thames (CRN: North Thames) and Jennifer Higgins, Senior Nurse and Research Lead at Barts Health CRF. They outlined how the Patient Research Experience Survey was delivered and gave insights into the experience of patients at Barts Health taking part in research. It was obvious that a lot of work was put into this. My thoughts on the result were that if we were given more survey forms and earlier, the results would have been very much better.

Nnebuife Oji, Senior Research Practitioner, Renal Unit, Barts Health NHS Trust, and Rahela Ali, Senior Data Manager, Renal Unit, Barts Health NHS Trust supported by Dr Usman Bashir spoke of their work in Renal Research.

I really must mention and give credit to the video showing the gentleman who gave his account of being in a clinical trial. He told a very gentle and affecting story of his journey and was a really good example of getting a message across. It was nicely understated and very effective.

It was good meeting new and old friends and acquaintances. The event was well attended. It was great to see so many of our TrialsConnect and PPAG members there.

I must confess to a slightly surreal feeling though because my “That’s the Professor of Medicine at Harvard School of Medicine covering his arse” story was in the event pack, I saw myself onscreen and I recognised one of the comments I made filling in the PRE Survey form a while back. Fame at last — I will sign autograph books on request!
